And my gods are Herman Melville, Emily Dickinson, Mozart. I believe in them with all my heart. And when Mozart is playing in my room, I am in conjunction with something I can’t explain — I don’t need to. I know that if there’s a purpose for life, it was for me to hear Mozart. Or if I walk in the woods and I see an animal, the purpose of my life was to see that animal. I can recollect it, I can notice it. I’m here to take note of. And that is beyond my ego, beyond anything that belongs to me, an observer, an observer.”
― Maurice Sendak
I-65, the major interstate joining Gary, Indiana to Mobile, Alabama now has sufficient numbers of both B20 biodiesel and E85 ethanol stations to ensure that drivers are never more than a tankful away from the next biofuel refilling station. Major cities along the route include Gary, IN, Lafayette, IN, Indianapolis, IN, Columbus, IN, Jeffersonville, IN, Louisville, KY, Nashville, TN, Athens, AL, Cullman, AL, Birmingham, AL, Montgomery, AL, and Mobile, AL.

The US Department of Energy provided the funding to all four of the individual states along the interstate.
Much influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, she specialized in painting animals and plants. Holden was made famous by the posthumous publication, in 1977, of her Nature Notes for 1906 under the title The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady. She was living in Kineton Green Road, Olton, Solihull in 1905-6 when she recorded the notes. The collection of seasonal observations, poetry, and pictures of birds, plants, and insects—which was never even considered for publication when it was composed—had the nostalgic charm of a vanished world seven decades later. It was a best seller.
Pamela Ayreshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02355517422186193106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8840386602778639355.post-90860743668567044752011-06-02T08:11:00.000-07:002011-06-10T15:36:17.428-07:00April -May - The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady - Edith Holden<img style="display: block; Much influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, she specialized in painting animals and plants.
Pamela Ayreshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02355517422186193106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8840386602778639355.post-2341436711863133162011-05-10T12:41:00.000-07:002011-06-10T15:34:26.203-07:00Mark Catesby's New World - birds<img style="display: block; First, how were the trees cut?
Answer: by hand, with cross-cut saws or axes.

 Source: Unknown

After the timber cruisers found the best stands of pine, the crew would come in and build a camp, which consisted of a bunkhouse, cook shanty which had a dining room and kitchen, the most important part of camp. There was a blacksmith and a carpenter as well as a granary and barn for the animals. The camp store would have the basic supplies need by the men, such as clothes and tobacco. These buildings were not very well built, as they were often meant to be temporary, to be moved when the trees were gone. Each camp typically had two foremen, about seventy men, twenty teams of horses and seven yoke of oxen. The men came to the camp in late fall or early winter, as logging was a cold weather job. The food was plentiful, if boring. The usual meal would be bread, potatoes, tea, beans and pork. The crews worked from about 4 a.m. until dusk, even eating the noon meal in the woods. The horses and oxen, on the other hand, were very well treated and rarely overworked.

 Source: Unknown

Evidence of loggers still remains in the woods of early 21st century Michigan, as evidenced by this white pine monolith in the woods near Otsego Lake. For some reason, the tree was "notched" but not felled. Later, fire scorched the stump.

Source: Photograph by Randy Schaetzl, Professor of Geography - Michigan State University

Next, how were the logs transported to the river? Usually, in winter, the logs were transported via sleds, pulled by horses.

Source: Unknown

The logs were far too big and heavy to take from the woods by dragging, so the loggers made ice-covered roads, where the logs could be pulled on sleds.

Source: Unknown

 Source: Unknown

The loads were often extremely big and contests were held between rival camps to see which could stack a load the highest. The logs were taken to the banks of rivers, where they were piled twenty to thirty feet high, awaiting the spring thaw. When rivers melted, the logs were pushed into the swollen rivers and floated to the mills. At the mills, the logs were sorted in the boom area, each identified by a log mark on the end of the logs. They were then sorted in the boom area, each company’s logs together.
When the winter season was well advanced the log hauling began. The roads were plowed of snow and sprinkled with water; they then froze into smooth, glassy ways. Over these the logs were hauled on sleds from the skidways to the rollways. The cutting went on through the winter season until the trees were all felled, or the spring thaws ruined the roads. By spring the last log was in place, the melting snow flooded the creek, the rollways were "broken out" and the drive was on.

Source: Unknown
The sled tracks had to be iced down, so that they would slide easily. Thus, it was the job of some men to, every day, go to the river, load up on water, and take the water to the logging roads. These roads were then "iced down", so that the next day logging could proceed easily. Below is an image or two of just such an ice sled, filling up with water (see the barrel of water being pulled out of the iced-over river?).

Source: Unknown

Nicely iced logging roads allowed lumberjacks to load up and haul tremendously large loads of logs. Images below illustrate this point well.

Source: Unknown

Click here for full size image (290 kb)

Source: Unknown

Be aware that most of the time, the sleds were never loaded this high--it took too much time and was too dangerous. These images were set up and posed, for show.

Source: Unknown

The image below illustrates not only how full these logging sleds could get, but also what intensive logging did to the previously-forested landscape!

Source: Unknown

Many people wonder and ask, "How did the loggers ever get the logs up so high onto a sled?" The image below may give you a hint.

Source: Unknown

The increased lumber production during the final decades of the 19th century was due in part to changes in machinery and techniques which brought greater efficiency to the industry. Throughout the first half of the 19th century lumbering had been a weather-dependent and seasonally limited enterprise. Cutting was done during the winter when timber could be pulled on large sleds, if there was snow, from where the tree had been felled to banking grounds (rollways) along a river.
The river drive was also dependent on a good winter snowfall for it was the spring runoff, which enabled the rivers to carry the huge pine logs to the sawmills at the mouths of the rivers. Log drivers were usually men who had spent the winter in the woods cutting timber. It was their job to control the flow of the river by building and breaking dams and to break up log jams they could not prevent.
Sawmills were most often located at the mouths of the driving rivers. Associations were formed to cooperate in the sorting of logs into a pond or bay where floating "booms" of logs separated the property of one company from that of another. From the booms logs were floated to the mills to be sawed.
Greater mill capacity coupled with a continuing demand for wood also put pressure on the loggers to cut as much as possible each season. A number of small changes improved the efficiency of woods operations somewhat. These included the substitution of the cross-cut saw for the axe in felling timber and the replacement of oxen with horses as sled teams.

Some of the images and text on this page were taken from various issues of Michigan History magazine.

This material has been compiled for educational use only, and may not be reproduced without permission. If you’re planning a visit to a national park in the near future, let them know how a national park shutdown would affect you. If you were affected by the shutdown in 1995 and 1996, let them know that, too. But most importantly, make sure they know that their constituents care deeply about the national parks. Remember, if a shutdown occurs, it will happen after midnight on Friday, April 8th. It could last hours, days, or weeks.

Call the Capitol Switchboard at 202.224.3121 and ask to speak to your representative. Use our answers to the questions below, as well as your personal experience, as talking points for your phone call.

Question: What happens to the communities the parks are located in or near?
Answer: National park closures in 1995-96 had a devastating impact on the people and businesses that depend on park tourism at parks including Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, and Everglades. During the last government shutdown, thousands of people who depended on the parks—employees of the Park Service, concessions operations, and the businesses in neighboring communities—found themselves temporarily out of work and without customers. It cost national park surrounding communities $14 million dollars a day. Every federal dollar invested in our national parks generates $4 in the local economies.

Question: National Park Week is April 16-24; will the parks be open even if the government is shutdown?
Answer: Unfortunately, they will not be open. Thousands of people, including many from other countries, will be turned away. A government shutdown would jeopardize family vacations and school field trips to places like the Statue of Liberty and Gettysburg. Tourists in Washington D.C. would not be able to go to the top of the Washington Monument or the exhibits at the Lincoln Memorial. The National Park Service has events planned around the country for National Park Week, but these would likely be canceled in the event of a shutdown.

Question: How would shutting down the parks affect our lives?
Answer: Nine out of every ten Americans have visited a national park, and just last year alone the parks welcomed more than 280 million visitors. Given our current economy, many American families have chosen to spend their family vacations and outings at a national park. If the parks are shut down, hundreds of thousands of Americans planning vacations or family outings will be turned away from enjoying our beautiful national parks. If the shutdown lasted for any amount of time, national parks would lose millions of visitors.

Question: How many national parks are there and how many would be shut down?
Answer: There are 394 National Park System units in 49 states. Sadly, the visitor centers, campgrounds, research centers and other facilities at all of these sites would generally be closed in the case of a government shutdown. Front gates will be locked and only the most essential park service personnel will be allowed to report to work. During the last shutdown, only one percent of park staff were able to report to work.

Question: Do the parks generate revenue?
Answer: Yes. A recent study commissioned by the National Parks Conservation Association found that every federal dollar invested in national parks generates at least four dollars of economic value to the public. National parks also support $13.3 billion of local private-sector economic activity and 267,000 private-sector jobs.

Question: How long were the parks closed during the last government shutdown?
Answer: The parks were closed for a total of 27 days (Nov. 14-19, 1995 and Dec. 16 - Jan. 6, 1996).

Question: What is the overall economic impact of closing the national parks?
Answer: The overall economic impact of national park closures would be substantial for some of the businesses that rely on the tourism that national parks draw. For example, during the last government shutdown, Mariposa County, California lost $10,000 per day in tax revenue because Yosemite was closed and 25 percent of adults in the county found themselves temporarily out of work. The total estimated economic loss could be more than $30 million a day.

Question: Is it economically advantageous for our government to invest in national parks?
Answer: Our national parks are critical to supporting the livelihood of businesses and communities across the country; so we have to do more than just keep them open. We have to keep them adequately funded. During a time of economic hardship when people are looking domestically for their spring and summer travels, we need to adequately fund the places that protect our American heritage and draw tourists from throughout the world. Park rangers and other staff are critical to protecting this unique American heritage and serving the many visitors who look forward to their national park vacations. People from around the world love to visit our national parks because they’re very clearly something America does right. Ronald Reagan called our national parks “the envy of the world,” and the National Parks Second Century Commission noted that “the National Park Service is arguably the most popular agency in the federal government.”

Question: Are park budgets threatened as a result of this congressional budget impasse?
Answer: Yes. The current short-term spending measure cut more than $100 million from the budget of the National Park Service. National parks protect our national treasures and generate many private-sector jobs. The NPS budget occupies only 1/13th of one percent of our federal budget. Yet there is a real threat that funding could be cut for park rangers and other staff who protect these special places, serve visitors and ensure their safety. We’re asking people to contact their members of Congress to urge them to both keep national parks open and prevent cuts to their funding.

Question: Wouldn't it be good for parks to have a break from visitation?
Answer: Closing our national parks would be the wrong thing to do. These national treasures should be open to everyone. People from all over the country and the world plan trips to our national parks every year. Closing our parks would not only deprive visitors of an experience of a lifetime, it would also mean that the men and women charged with protecting our national parks would not be available to do so. The biologists, ecologists, and other resource professionals that are employed by the park service work to rid our parks of invasive species and to protect the threatened and endangered species that call our national parks home. That work will be severely hampered by a government shutdown.

http://www.npca.org/park_policy/faq-shutdown.html

http://www.nationalparksociety.com/

http://www.pbs.org/nationalparks/

Pamela Ayreshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02355517422186193106noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8840386602778639355.post-34094047528469848792011-04-05T18:28:00.000-07:002011-04-05T18:30:25.934-07:00live feed - eagles
<a href="http://www.ustream.tv/" style="padding: 2px 0px 4px;
